SITE: Flagler Beach State Recreation Area extends across a barrier island three miles south of the town of Flagler Beach. This area is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean on the east and by the Intracoastal Waterway on the west. During low tide, the broad shell-strewn beach becomes a favorite feeding area for many kinds of shorebirds. Pelicans ride the updrafts along the crest of the dunes. At night during the months of May through early September endangered and threatened Loggerhead, Green and the rare Leatherback sea turtles crawl on the beach to nest and lay their eggs as they have done for thousands of years. A wide variety of bird life can be observed during the fall, winter and spring months.
